[pokes T.V.] Virginia is South, not Northeast. Every tourism book ever written knows this, yet everyone thinks VA is a Northeastern state

People form the deap south might consider Virginia norhtern. Virginia is celary cotuh rather then north though. Northerners think MAryland is south and Southerners think Maryladn is north. I don't think Virginia has as much of an identiy issue as MAryland though.

True. Maryland could techically qualify as a Southern state, since they're below the Mason-Dixon line. However, they weren't part of the Confederacy, so they're usually considered Northern (even though they were a slave state). So, Maryland is open to interpretation.

Virginia, however, is below the Mason-Dixon line, and was part of the Confederacy, fitting both prevailing definitions of "Southern". I've yet to come across anyone in the Deep South who considered VA to be a Northern state.

For those who aren't from the US: States qualify as North or South usually based on one of two factors. The Mason-Dixon line was the divider between slave states and "free" states in pre-Civil War USA. All states created below it would be slave states, and all new states created above it would be free states. It was one of several diplomatic compromises struck to alleviate tensions between the North and South, and is considered the "correct" way to identify a state as North or South.

However, those who live in Southern states use a different method: Who was part of the rebel Confederacy during the Civil War. This limits the South to Georgia, Mississippi, Alabama, Texas, Lousiana, Arkansas, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennesee, and Virginia. West Virginia is also usually included for reasons completely unknown to me, and Florida is excluded because it's too full of "rich retired yankees and broke-poor immigrants".

So, poor Maryland is considered a southern state by the North, and a northern state by the South

(Sorry for the essay, but after spending YEARS learning about this in school, in the only class I actually cared about, it's kinda hard to not get carried away )

[EDIT: Added map. There will be a quiz later ]

Outside fo the populated centers Flroida realy is the deapest of the sotuher states. So it tends to average out.

Maryland only stayed part of the union becuase Mr. Lincon arrested all of the pro sucsession members of the Maryland legislature indefeinatly without charges.

The trianlge form DC to Philly (through balitmore) to Fredrick is realy part of the North culturyl whiel the eastern shore is part of the south culturly and Western Maryland is like West Virginia and Central (not Pitsburgh or Philly) Pennslyvania.

All of this dosnt; matter to much seign how there are much sharper divisions within states then between states. A poor person living in rual Virginia lives a lot like a poor person living in rual Pennsylvania.

...What. You can't just go for a geographic definition of north, south, east and west?

We're Americans. We need to needlessly complicate everything.

Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

While historically the name "British Columbia" makes perfect sense, it still does come across slightly strange when discussing a region in Canada!
