Earth hour

Postby Richard K Niner » Fri Mar 28, 2008 8:56 pm

So, it's almost upon us...

Earth hour, for those who don't know, is an international event where participants turn off their lights Saturday night at 8 pm, local time. The goal? Reduce power consumption by 10%, helping in the fight against climate change (real or not, it'll also help with your reliance on whatever powers your grid).

With all the nearby municipalities getting involved by shutting off the street lights, I'm using this as an opportunity to visit the David Dunlap Observatory, not far from here, to look at a night sky with much less light pollution.

So, what are you doing?

In all likelihood, I won't be at home during that hour. I'll be in a restaurant with my family. So I won't have to do anything.

Get the restaurant to turn off their lights and bring out candles Image

As a very energy-minded person, I've already ensured my lights will be off by not paying my electricity bill.

I do that all the time already. I can naviagte a room in the dark, and the only time I need a light on is when I'm specifically looking for something (or if I'm eating dinner, but I usually do that at around 6 while the sun's still setting). And I usually have a penlight for that.

Of course, that's when I'm the only one in the house at the moment. The other people like having lights on. I can't sleep with the blasted lights on, darnit!

I rather like light, but I'll be out of town this weekend, so my lights and computer will be off anyway.

Our school held the annual Nike Air Band tonight during that hour, so going without lights would be a bit of a problem. :P

I just calculated my carbon footprint and by doing nearly everything on the tickbox list (which I already do) we save absolutly no carbon. So eh.

I once spent some time in a building with no electricity or plumbing, as it was condemned and was being demolished about...two weeks after my lease ended. When I say lease, I mean the scabacious fellow who took money off me wasn't kicking me out just yet.

I wrote a lot of letters by candlelight. Smoked a lot of cigarettes and probably did irreparable damage to my liver with the amount of whiskey I drank over those few months.

Good times, though, good times.
