...is it dust?
Miyo! Chikara no chizu!

Living proof that Ninja and Pirates can live together in peace, harmony, and fun at the expense of ye hapless townsfolk.

"
< e
-|-|-/ <
< e
_________/
-------------------------
Hey... None of the above.

The answer is something very general, that we see every day and will probably do so in future.

Before you say, no it's nothing to do with mirrors or your reflections on other surfaces.

The first line is derived from Hamlet, the "quintessence of dust" being what the answer appears to be like.
Yes! It is mankind indeed!

The "quintessence of dust" is from Hamlet (as I said). An imperfect reflection is from the Christian idea that we were made in God's image, but are obviously not perfect. The third line is from the philosophical argument that states we can only dream or think a limited amount of things, based on our observations. Millenias of tome is obviously human history. And despite our fraility we can (as individuals or communities) survive beyond our time.

Your turn I think Maeglin.
Alright, I'll toss one in...

One day, a man comes home from work. He gets out a piece of wood and looks at it. He then frowns and kills himself. Why?

EDIT: Before you ask, it's a board of wood. Could be a 2x4 or some plywood, just a piece of a dead tree. No "second meaning" on the word "wood" here.
