use single quotation marks (') to indicate speech, double quotation marks (") to indicate quotation within speech
That is BACKWARD and UNAMERICAN.

Almost every book I have uses this convention.

Almost every book I have uses the opposite, the exception being Stephen King because he's a weirdo.

Every book I've ever read and every English class I've ever taken uses double quotation marks for speech.

I'm almost tempted to look it up online now. But that would take effort.

yeah, I almost always see it " " being speech, ' ' being quote within speech. We might be having a problem with england vs. america, but either way it doesn't matter which you do. If you decide to do it one way, and after you've already written your story someone complains and suggests you do it the other, at that point they're just being a pussy

Yeah, I've actually never heard of it being used this way either.

Who sleeps shall awake, looking through the window of our lives
Waiting for the moment to arrive...
Show us the silence in the rise,
So that we may someday understand...

A quick look through my books reveals that only the British versions of Redwall that I have use single marks to indicate speech. All the others use double.

I always yell at my friend because he uses (') instead of (") when he codes.

Peculiar. I prefer single quotes because they make the page appear less cluttered, although provided one is consistent there's no real reason to choose one over the other.

I hereby suggest that Johnathan continues the old <<>> "" scheme. because when you think about it, it's a hell of a lot better than Cormac McCarthy.
