Well this was an anthro sketch to begin with. It was originally a cat with a sword and using her claws as a weapon. A technique similiar to the one used by Inuyasha. Anyway I thought to myself I bet this sketch would look better if it was in human, and viola! Since she isn't a cat anymore and I wanted to keep the pose, I had to give her something in her left hand. Hence the knife.

What is the point of having a knife AND a sword?
Many swordery styles rely on the use of two weapons, one for blocking and one for attacking. A common example of this was sword and dagger fighting. The dagger was often used for parrying, opening up opportunities to use the sword to cause grievous bodily harm.

There is also recorded instances of a dagger being used in addition with a sword for attacking.

In the case of a sai, a weapon designed to catch and possibly break swords I saw it in TMNT therefore it happens 100% of the time in real life, a person would disable the opponents sword and then stab the person. Perhaps in the face.

For more information, check out this article I found written by someone who is possibly too depely interested in pointy objects.
That which does not kill me, cripples me for life.

Swords are for wimps who are scared of fists.

Here's my interpretation of the opening scene of Book 21 of Homer's The Odyssey.
