oh wait... it's Juliet, from Romeo and Juliet, isn't it? (she took the poison, sang, then died, after discovering Romeo had committed suicide, when he thought that Juliet had committed suicide...)...oh wait...maybe not...

The only other thing I can think of is that she was shot while on stage for giving a bad preformace. and Thusly the show ended.

The woman is a tightrope walker in a circus, I think. Her act consists of walking the rope blindfolded, accompanied by music, without a net. When the conductor stops the music, it means she has safely walked across the rope and can safely stepped off. But O NOS there was a subsititute and he stopped the music too fast, so when she stepped off, she fell to her death and, well, died. DID I GET IT

I know the derivitive phrase, but I don't know the character itself. The phrase is "It's not over until the Fat lady sings" Is that close enough. The ending of the opera in question is that the lady gets incidentally killed by her lover, he crys, she crys, she dies.
