You can buy it at the grocery store. It's used for covering shelves and stuff. Just be sure to get only the removable kind, obviously. There are different brands, and some are better than others. Mostly, it's not a good idea to use the stuff in hot weather, because then the adhesive gets all gooey. Not a big problem up here.

Basically, it's one of those things you have to experiment with. One can also cut a paper stencil, but then you have to be really careful, and even then you're almost guaranteed to get a big blob of paint somewhere bad. Waterproof plastic masking is the way to go. (Except for ink. With an ink roller and ink pads, you can use paper masking with no problems. Haven't done that in years, tho.)
Oh, and another bit of advice: never, ever use solvent to try and remove mistakes. It will burn a hole in your cheap Bristol board and force you to drastically crop your piece to remove the damaged area.
