Maybe humans are legendary in the O&M-verse.
We are the Precursors, the strange beings who built a vast and mighty civilization. Then, one day, we vanished, and the Earth was quiet.

The spark of sentience dawned in the lesser beasts, however, and upon the surviving remains of our world they built their own to the model of what we left behind - the Constitution, the records kept in libraries, and yes, REM.
I wasn't even thinking of "Inherit the Earth" or that WWII animation.
