They seem too philosophical for little children,
DCS addressed long ago the accusation that his characters do not talk like children their age. His response was that lots of comics before his were like that. Millie shows about the same penchant for philosophy as Calvin.

I generally don't think of children as "children", the way some adults conceptualise them. They are just as capable of insight, and sometimes they even make more sense than older people.

'Course, that doesn't mean they're not completely silly sometimes, either.

It has to be said, though, that not ALL children are capable of this level of reasoning. I've only known a few, in all honesty.
