That tradition has been discontinued at some weddings after a bridge got a grain of rice somehow thrown in her ear leading to permanent deafness.
You'd think it would have been simpler to just not employ bridges in wedding ceremonies.

We can't throw cookies because Mexican wedding cookies are too soft to throw. They would either crumble in your hand, in the air, or disentigrate on impact.
