And if you can't afford croutons just wait for bread to go stale, it's pretty much the same thing. :P

Actually they go in soup too.
They can work in soup, in my experience, but it's not something I've heard of people other than me doing (and I only did it as an experiment - a successful one, I guess I should add Image ).
Codecat and me are both Dutch; I'll chalk it up to language/cultural difference then. Maybe croutons are different things in other countries.
Well, to my knowledge, they're dried out (stale) bread, cut into cubes and typically added to Caesar salad:

There are a couple visible in there, though those ones are bigger than the ones that come mass-produced in those boxes on our supermarket shelves.

Pretty much the same thing, except for seasonings and spices. Gotta have those! :-P (stale bread-seasonings=Yuck!)
