But it doesn't have an 'a' sound but an 'e', so the 'grey' spelling is actually as phonetic as it gets.7

It has an 'a' sound, just like may, say, lay, gravy. Although vowels probably sound different in Dutch.<

Gray is just the Americans spelling everything phonetically.
Ha, I wish we spelled everything foneticly. Noah Webster did a lot to simplify spelling in this country, and FDR tried to push it a step further, but it's never worked out. As long as school teachers still put those little red "SP"s over every instance of "thru" on papers, we haven't won yet.

All of those have the phonetic 'e' sound. Just look on Wiktionary for all of them. An 'a' sound is like the word 'a' itself, when pronounced as the letter it has an 'e' sound.

I use grey interchangeably, although if I take the time to actually process that there are two spellings I usually write grey out of sheer principle to spell with commonwealth spellings whenever possible6

DCS should've ended the comic a year or two ago.

If everybody spelt everything phonetically, then a) people with different accents would get confused and b) people who can spell wouldn't be able to get that warm fuzzy feeling one gets when correcting those who can't. This is a great loss.
