Basically, it was a story that kind of blew up in NBC's face--a particular type of GMC truck was an explosion hazard in about 1 of 100 crashes, so Dateline did (I think) a journalistically very solid report on it, followed by a 14-second clip of one of the trucks actually exploding in a collision. Then it came out that they'd rigged the truck to explode, which isn't that surprising since it would have been a pretty big waste of money to crash 100 trucks until one of them blew up.<br><br>But it distracted everybody from the very real story. GMC basically got off the hook, so the story had the opposite of its intended effect. Around here there was a similar thing, decades ago, about bottles of lemonade exploding on rare occasions. I learned the story from a Newseum exhibit in which the computer gives a series of journalists' ethical dilemmas and asks the user which choice they would make. After voting, the user sees the poll results and then the actual story. I almost always voted the way the real journalists did not, and the other side, even when an easy minority, usually appalled me in its percentage. The only near-even split that I saw was on whether to reveal a famous tennis player's AIDS against his request.
