With all the weird stuff he puts up with from his two closest peoples I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up in the nut house, what with eating his own tail and all.

A Hoosier is a native or resident of Indiana. I live in Indiana and thus a Hoosier.

I've never heard the saying in this strip, either. I get the joke, but I just didn't think it was very funny. I do think DCS is trying to add more expression to the characters faces, though.

A Hoosier is what norsenerd is, that is, a native of Indiana. Or someone attending Indiana University, as norsenerd does. So, norsenerd is a Hoosier.

Anyway.....

Where the term "Hoosier" came from, and what it might have originally meant, no one really knows.
Rick Reilley did a fantastically funny column about the origins of the word hoosier in Sports Illustrated last year. Unfortunately I don't remember a thing about it other than the fact that it was hyserical.

A non native resident of Indiana can also be called a Hoosier. There are plety of origons for the term Hoosier. Most of them are rediculus. My favorite one is as falows:

In the early day's of Indiana there were a lot of bar fights and it was comon for people to get whole or part of an ear bitten off. At the end of the fight someone would point at the ear and ask "whose ear?" and eventy Hoosier stuck.

The most likley explanation is as falows:

Most of the imegrants to Indiana when it was first begin setlled were from the south where the word "hoos" ment hill. Since most of the people moving here lived in the hills before they movved they were Hoosiers or hillbillies. The term stuck for the nickname for nativis and residence.

Most states have nicknames but have been promply forgoten. Like the Oaklahoma Sooners (from those that snuck over the line beofre the state was opened) and the Missouri Pukes.
