It's probably better to find out why the thief is trying to rob you, talk about it, an convince him its bad. Hell, if he needed to steal for food or necessities, I might even give him some money (assuming I had enough). That way, he can get what he needs, and hopefully realize that hurting others won't help. It's different if the guy's a career criminal or has lots of money though, then he's just an asshole.
As for physical violence, I'm against it most of the time, because it only proves I'm stronger than you, not that I'm right. I mean, I haven't thrown a real punch since I was 8, even though I've been attacked (attacked is really too strong of a word, but I can't think of a better one) several times. I will defend myself, and try and trip or otherwise hinder my opponent, but I never directly retaliate. That would just make it harder to reconcile later.
Funny that a lot of people I initially despised are now my friends.
