Heh, I was hanging out with my friend Tony today (the one from the story) and he had a lantern igniter for camping. It's a flint and magnesium and you flick it and it makes cool sparks. Very handy, very shiny. We set paper on fire with it.

Magnesium!
You better start collecting that stuff and then make a rocket out of it!
You know, a petrol bomb with magnesium inside so when it explodes it'll spray the magnesium everywhere.

You mean potassium? Sodium works, too, but it's not nearly as spectacular unless you have a huge chunk. I saw a video of a 5 pound chunk of pure sodium thrown into water pit at a strip mine (so there was no life in it). It caused a massive explosion, then it fragmented and the fragments flew several feet in the air, and when they fell into the water, they exploded and fragmented, and the fragmentation/reaction process continued for about 15 minutes, causing many, many very large explosions. It was great.

You're right.. it's potassium. I knew I was mistaken, but I had no patience to look it up and was sure someone would eagerly correct it.

Heh, thanks, norse. Sadly, these are only stories I hear from my friends about their lives (or in the case of the video, my chem teacher showed us that to demonstrate alkali MEHTUL's reactivity). Most of these stories I don't participate in (like the napalm story: I wasn't there when it happened, I only heard that from my friend Tony...in fact, he's the focal point for a LOT of my stories, he's crazy). I need to start being there when all this cool stuff happens...

Quote: (FoxChild)

my high school science teacher actually had been crazy enough to do what the students asked him to, when it came to science. we blew up so much stuff that year, a good bit with sodium too. We've spent the first half of this year learning about atomic structure, properties, and the periodic table, but very few labs. Thankfully, this semester we're supposed to start doing tons of labs, including the sodium lab, hehe. And I suppose a small "accidental" adding of a bit too much sodium is bound to happen eventually, right? ::evil laugh:: Hey, I know what it's gonna do and I'm careful, I know how to contol it, no one'll be hurt...unintentionally...

yeah, crazyness is almost always a good foundation for good stories. they can get you in trouble, but the experience is usually worth all that.
Just try to stay out of prison
