As such there's an overlap between anime and cartoons, namely 'a drawn animation from Japan'

To add to that, "Anime," translated to english, means "animation."<br><br>Cartoon, while referring to animation, usually refers to animation directed towards kids.

Simply because Stock Animation is a different technique to cartoons... (which is a term I'm perfectly happy applying to things aimed at adults)

I'm not sure it has to be drawn to be a cartoon. The show "Cartoon Kablam!" featured stop-action animation in addition to drawn kinds. And of course, the term can include non-animations like comic strips.

It makes you wonder if that new show, "Tom Goes to the Mayor", is a cartoon. The charecters are entirely blue-lined still photos, crudely animated.
