Bush's particular style of diplomacy didn't make any new friends though.

This better not become a trend, or else I'd strongly recommend going to war with Africa.

How dare they ruin the sound of thousands of Americans not cheering?

Also, given England's last game I now know what it's like to be sodding Scottish or Irish.

It was the most uncomfortable baseball game I’ve been a part of in a long time

The most uncomfortable game I was ever part of was a game where it was 110 degrees out but the other team's couch refused to agree to postpone the game even after one of our players went to the hospital for heat stroke.

So, the French team is in turmoil after two bad games and players and staff openly criticise the coach who wasn't well liked even before the tournament began. After he said he'd leave one of the big players off the next game because that player insulted him, it's anybody's guess how long he'll stay.

So far the games have been marked by the unwieldy success smaller, usually less powerful teams have been getting. Algeria drawing with England, Serbia beating Germany, New Zealand holding the previous champions Italy to a draw, Switzerland beating one of the favourites Spain. So much so that many groups are still open to any team hoping to advance to the next round. A big pain for all those hoping to make some quick cash from the games I bet.

It's worse than that for France, Anelka's been sent home for "insulting behaviour" towards the training staff and now the rest of the team are on strike. That's just what they need. Then again, it'd be hilarious if the French went out at the group stage.

You mean to say... the French have surrendered?

This Portugal game has just gotten silly now.

EDIT: Okay seriously? This has gone from silly to pantsless ridiculous.

For those who don't know, Portugal destroyed North Korea 7-0. High scoring games with such a difference aren't as common, but they do happen once in a while.

Your daily World Cup news on Define Cynical!

South Africa beat France 2-1 meaning France end up last in their group and go home without a single win and 1 goal in 3 games. South Africa also go out but at least they won once. Uruguay and Mexico advance and they'll play the 2nd and 1st ranked teams from the second group respectively. That groups games are later today with the second place still contested.

Most open group at this stage seems to be Group D with Ghana topping it currently. Trailing them by just 1 point is Germany and Serbia. Their final games are tomorrow, as is Group C's, England and USA's group.

America and England go through, as do Germany and Ghana. Ghana being so far the only African team to advance, and it seems likely it'll remain that way.

The real hullabaloo was in Group F where the previous champions Italy lost to Slovakia 3-2 meaning they ended their group without winning a match and in last place. There was also some serious breaches of fair-play by the Italians on the Slovak goalkeeper I think, pushing him into the net as they went to retreive the ball after a goal. The Italian manager, like the French manager after their loss to South Africa, also apparently didn't shake hands with the other manager after the game. So all round sore losers there it seems. That puts the two finalists from the previous World Cup, France and Italy out in last place in the group stages.

New Zealand were the other "losers" in that group. They tied all three of their games and went out undefeated.
