IBM takes first 3D image of atomic bonds

The detailed chemical structure of a single molecule has been imaged for the first time, say researchers.
The physical shape of single carbon nanotubes has been outlined before, using similar techniques - but the new method even shows up chemical bonds.
Understanding structure on this scale could help in the design of many things on the molecular scale, particularly electronics or even drugs.
The IBM researchers report their findings in the journal Science.
It is the same group that in July reported the feat of measuring the charge on a single atom.
This is insane. I don't think we'll truly see the full potential of this in our lifetimes.

Science! Hell yeah.

This is one of the most exciting things to happen in nanotechnology for a few months now :)

This is extremely impressive. Achievements like this inspire the same feeling in me that patriotism does in others.

Maybe you should found and then become a citizen of the Empiric Empire of Science then. Instead of president it would have a... Chief of Research or something.

Milestones in scientific achievement are the ONLY thing that make me like America.

Unless it's not even America that made the discovery. Then I'm just like... -_-; come on dude. That's not how you become the best country on Earth. Put some effort into it.

I misread the subject and though it said 3-D atomic bombs. I then thought that wasn't so impressive because I've seen 3-D pics of nukes before.

Now that I've read it again, yeah that's pretty impressive.

What about our ability to spend billions on huge epic movies that consist of nothing but explosions? Hell, makes ME proud to be American!

I don't believe any single movie has managed to spend over a billion USD in production costs.

I believe Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End is one of the highest, at ~$300 million. A lot, but not billions.

Also, if you ever go to SEE one of these movies, you're being an immense hypocrite, no better than people who complain about how mistreated animals raised for food are then go have a burger.

I make a point of not going to any movie directed by michael bay or any other movie that all my friends are seeing. Except the dark knight. I was dragged along to that one.

Pants Michael Bay. My friend's dad is a sound engineer (which brings to mind massive, sound-based death rays). He was called upon at one point to get the sound of a biplane to appear during a conversation in one of Michael Bay's movies. Our dear Mr. Bay, upon hearing the sound, told him he's a talentless hack and that a biplane doesn't sound like that (despite the sound being sampled from footage of a biplane). He then found his own sound for the biplane.

Obviously I can't verify the story, beyond knowing that my friend's dad is telling the truth about his occupation. But honestly, considering the quality of the movies Michael Bay directs, it's hard to believe he's anything but a narcissistic idiot.

That's exactly how I imagined (and deeply hoped) Michael Bay to be like, for I now have more reason to hate him! =DD
massive, sound-based death rays
That's precisely what came to my mind the instant I read "sound engineer." bbvvvvvvvvSHSSHHHHHBWWOOOOOOOOOSHHH. Your head explodes.

I'd bring the machine up with his dad, but he'd probably kill me on the spot to keep it a secret.

Or Michael Bay would. It's probably his funding that's making it, too, for his next movie.

I'm now beginning to find this entirely plausible. :<
