I don't know how she could have possibly considered this a good idea.
It's one of the first rules of elementary school: do not assume drinking fountains work properly. You push the button knowing the risk.

The dilemma when you get a stain on your clothes during school (or work, for that matter) is: do you just accept that your clothes have a stain now, or do you try to wash it into relative invisibility in the bathroom, and risk walking around with wet clothes? At least, that was my dilemma. Maybe, like Millie, I just never learn.

Since the rule seems to be that you just have to wear some sort of clothing in school, why doesn't Millie just take her overalls off? She can always borrow Ozy's hat or jacket in a pinch.

Because, if Ozy removes his hat, his brain will freeze.

I meant I don't get why specifically a school drinking fountain would do this.

School drinking fountains have weird water pressure problems. I've seen some where you barely get any water at all, and some where it shoots a high-pressure stream, and once one that usually did the former but sometimes did the latter and hit you a lot harder than you thought it would.

At my college, there was a water fountain that would shoot an arc of water that would land two or three feet to the left of the fountain.

Ah, I see, yes I have experienced that. Never understood why, also some water fountains never seemed to get coolwater, or had a VERY disgusting taste.

Honestly my first thought was that someone plugged the hole with a wad of chewing gum to make it do that. Happened a lot in my childhood I think.

In my high school the drinking fountain in the gym had the worse water pressure and was the warmest. Nobody used if they didn't have to because you were better off going to one in the hall.
