Third panel 'shock' expression is adorable.

Fourth panel Millie standing is weird, though; her weight looks like it's shifted to the leg she's not actually standing on, kinda strange.

Second panels just nice.

I dunno. If I were to originally read these strips first, I probably would have reject OM. I guess these News paper style jokes are just not cutting it for me. The art's fine though.

Pretty basic, but I can dig it. I agree with the 4th panel awkwardness. Never noticed it before.

BTW, the original "Across The Universe" was pretty bad. It didn't get really good until the newer version in 2003.

Apologies to everyone. Except Fritz.

The joke isn't great but I love the insight into Ozy in the first two panels. Also cute pawpads.

I think this used to be the 1st strip that appeared in the archives???
Who sleeps shall awake, greeting the shadows from the sun
Who sleeps shall awake, looking through the window of our lives
Waiting for the moment to arrive...
Show us the silence in the rise,
So that we may someday understand...

According to the archives I downloaded from this site (which has been offline for a while now), yes, it was.

Yes, so I wasn't remembering wrong in the other topic when I mentioned this. This used to be the first strip.

I guess the reason it's too "newspapery" is because back then she was trying to get syndicated and these sort of jokes might have a better chance.

Jokes that aren't risky. Or risky enough to fly under the censors and the barely contained need for outrage brought about by pen and ink most conservatives have. The limit is less well defined nowadays I think.

I don't think the jokes need to be risky, just lest general. Its like the differance between seeing an independant film and a family orientated blockbuster. The newspaper comics need to appeal to a larger audience and as a result it needs to get a nod of amusment from alot of people as opposed to getting alot of laughter from a small audience.
