We get the explanation for Llewlyn's fear of dentists in the next strip, but I am personally much more interested in why he's afraid of rubber chickens.

It's simply that he grew up in a different era, when comedy was a somewhat less developed science.
I wish I could have drawn a more fearsomely "photorealistic" dragon, here, but I did the best I could at the time.
