I thought it was a reference to fear and loathing since we were talking about acid and coke and with the trying to kill one's self in the bathtub with a radio, I found my understanding of it to be funny.

Because the attempted understanding was that it was a reference to something, or it made sense in some way. It doesn't. It's an unjoke (just like the article says); it's not meant to be humorous in and of itself, it's the reaction that's supposed to be the joke.
