Of course not; this is simply what Simpson needs, although bugger if I can tell WHY Simpson needs Alpha to wear a necklace and carry a staff.

I would guess, though, that this is Simpson's way of portraying a primeval society, possibly as a contrast to the society from which Raine just escaped.

So that makes them better than the horrible humans that would have fed her, provided for her, and taken care of her.....

It doesn't. Judging from the strip with the tofu dog food or whatever, neither society is meant to be ideal.

Also, am I the only one thinking about the wolfpack confrence scene in Disney's "The Jungle Book"? (granted, the lead wolf didn't have a staff or a necklace, but still.)

I'm also thinking about the dog pack led by Fido the Poodle in one of Terry Pratchett's "Discworld" novels; can't remember which one. There you also had a pack of dogs acting like a wild wolf pack, and the leader idealized the wolves' social simplicity, elevating basic survival cravings to mystic levels (the whole "inner hunter" crap in RD). Pratchett, however, used it as satire; Simpson is actually trying to create drama with it (note: not "internet drama").

One last thought, and this has been bugging me ever since "Alpha" was mentioned in the strip, untill finally I just had to register and put it down:
Even though Alpha wants to distance itself from Human influence, the name it adopts and the names it gives the other pack members are drawn from HUMAN DEFINITIONS. "Alpha" and "Delta" are designations used by Humans to describe pack hirarchy; why would a dog that wants to reject that USE these "racist" terms?

And yes the scene reminds me of the Jungle books, only you know minus the bad names, the constant calling someone 'Bitch" (I REALLY Hate it how Simpson uses it over and over) and ofcourse the bone necklace/staff
