I like how at least five people in this thread seem to act favorable towards the idea of titles but only 1 person has voted "yes".
The poll question specifies ranks.
Oh, like I have the ability to read.

Who sleeps shall awake, looking through the window of our lives
Waiting for the moment to arrive...
Show us the silence in the rise,
So that we may someday understand...

We used to have custom titles when it was Invision.

Yes on those, no on ranks basically.

You see the space between your avatar picture and your username to the left side of every post? This topic is about the possibility of enabling people to put a short phrase in that space if they want and change it when they want. It's another customisation like a signature or avatar. We had it in the past when the forum software was different and mine said "Last Year's Man" after the Leonard Cohen song, to quote one example.

Well I am in favor of customized imaginative originality so I guess I'll vote yes.

My post count is a palindrome.

Hey, it'd be cool if there could be custom titles that would automatically set itself to read "My post count is a palidrome" whenever your post count becomes a palindrome. And then would go back to the way it was before once a user posts again. Brilliant!

if there were karma no one would have positive. now that I think about it that's pretty much reason enough for us to implement it.

We should probably think about upgrading to PHPBB3 anyway, since this version has been known to have problems and, by the way, is no longer supported. I suspect the skins will need to be rebuilt from scratch though.

That said, I don't think PHPBB3 has native support for custom titles either; at least it's not referred to as such. But the tweak looks pretty simple.

I srsly think we should just remove the space visually for people that don't have titles, so then you can make your avatar LOOK like you have a title.

An upgrade to PHPBB3 or SMF would be nice. (SMF does have native support for custom titles.)

SMF is fairly nice forum software, although whether you prefer the UI to phpBB's is largely personal preference. A conversion script for phpBB to SMF is available, as is (obviously) phpBB2 to phpBB3.

Updating forum software is always a hassle, though
