Ranking System

Why doesn't DC have one? (Besides the admin and mod ranks, that is.) I think it would be fun to have one, based on post count, join date or just random things assigned to individual members.

Alternately, why not give members an option to enter a custom title in their profile that will appear below their name in posts?

Thoughts? And people who have the authority to make such a change, would you be willing to implement it?

Other than creating groups with certain titles, there's not a whole lot one can do from a standard phpBB admin panel. User-set custom titles in phpBB 2 can only be achieved with a mod, and the ability to do that is Jason's and Jason's alone.

I think this calls for a forum upgrade, TO PHPBB3!

Thirded.

But ranks usually cause strife in one form or another. Either people spam to get inflated post counts or...well, there'z this one board I'm on where users can adjust each others' "karma", which you'd think might make folks behave, but really it just makes folks kvetch about having low karma, or that so-and-so has such a high karma compared to everybody else.

custom title plz

or rather, get jason to edit the HTML so that those that DON'T have a title don't have the space for it, so that your avatar goes right up directly underneath your username. That way, you can create a fake title and it would be spooky

Right, so I think custom titles would be sweet. We already have them on GUA, but then we use vB3 on there :P

Also! RocketGirl, on the "karma" system, have you ever heard of "user reputation"? Assuming you've been on a newer vBulletin forum.

No, but...it sounds like the same thing as karma in this context.
Assuming you've been on a newer vBulletin forum.
Probably, but I haven't been paying attention, really.

yeah, karma's only good on those sites where people actually give a damn about whether you have "good reputation" or not, like where it's a matter of spending hours doing what the person said, only to get a virus, or not.

I don't fully understand the question. Please explain more lucidly

Karma would not work here at all. Custom titles would be kind of cool; but rankings would be just as bad as Karma.

Yeah. There'z this one board I'm on for another comic where I have 10 karma, the highest of anybody except the comic's creator, and I've been hovering there for a few months...and some people are really, really tetchy about it. Like the one guy who sat at -7 karma for about three months.
But you can't boost your own karma; people have to actually like your contributions to boost your rep. I was flattered, but I was hardly campaigning for Karma Recipient.

I've since taken the position that karma is bullshit and nobody should care. When my karma dropped a point because I'd made a snide remark, I didn't notice for weeks. Not until someone decided to rib me about it, and I was all, "What? What? Oh. Huh. Well, whatever."

Karma and ranks just cause this kind of in-fighting; why have them, sez I? This board's already kinna snarky sometimes, an' I think karma and ranks have the potential to kill it off.

I like how at least five people in this thread seem to act favorable towards the idea of titles but only 1 person has voted "yes".

The poll question specifies ranks.
