About time. There's a fine line between "misunderstood genius" and "just pants up". I think he was the latter.

It was weird, I was just thinking about him early this morning. What a shame.

My fiance texted me that he was dead, so I went into the other room where my coworkers were, made the announcement, and then asked "So either one of you know who this guy is?"

Also, I didn't like Catcher In The Rye...it was really whiny and annoying self indulgent curd. Now Steinbeck, he could write angst.

Hey I didn't like Moby-Dick. It tried to cram too much material into one story.

I never read "Catcher in the Rye" though.

He was pretty crazy, and hadn't done anything except suing people since 1965. Still, he wrote some good stuff, I think.

This. People applaud him for one book mostly, when there's so many other writers out there who kept writing after their initial success and managed to turn out good books.

The Catcher in the Rye has to be one of the most polarizing books of all time. Everybody I've met fits into one of three categories: either they love the book, or they hate the book, or they've never read it.

That guy was a major recluse. Wonder if someone is going to make a movie now that his estate belongs to whoever. He never allowed any movie adaptations, something I respect him for. I personally like The Catcher in the Rye , but I'd hate for them to make a movie out of it. Also it isn't quantity that counts and you're supposed to think Holden is a jackass, whiny, spoiled, delusional, and a lier. Its the effect that he was looking for. So succesfully achieving that makes him a great writer.

I've loved Catcher in the Rye in every read, now numbering around a half-dozen.

To be honest, I find that some of his short stories are actually superior literary works. However, few of them capture life experiences as tangible and 'simple' as growing up. I still haven't read any work of literature that so naturally illustrates the mental state of being a teenager, and that's enough for me to tirelessly praise it.
