Though I have the feeling the author of this has a very big political bias and wants to cause a ruckus, I think this one is a pretty important one for people to know about.

http://www.congress.org/congressorg/iss ... r>
Glad I'm Canadian...

Weee. The US is getting conscription. YAy.

Anyways I am in favor of making the draft more equatable and alowing women and college students to be rafted. I am scared about being drafted but if my country wants me to serve I will do so honorably. That's the day after my 21st birthday too. If I am drafted first (highly unlikly) and asuming the draft is iniciated it will be like: happy birthdya, report to basic training.

Bleh, if I get drafted I'll be in Canada the next day, assuming I can't play any of my three "Get Out of the Draft Free" cards.

Note that the article says the legislation is pending, it isn't in effect yet. It has to be passed by both the House and the Senate, and there's no guarantee it will.
There's no guarantee it WON'T, either, Congress has been wanting to reinstate the draft ever since the 9-11 attacks.

True that. I guess, like everything else, we have to sit back and wait to see what happens.

I'm against the reinstatement of the draft myself, even though I'm too old to be affected.
Well, I'm not just sitting around, this has been bumped to first priority on my activism list, tied for first place with the Federal Marriage Amendment.

So much for the freedom to live without fear, eh?

I WOULD say I'm glad I live in the UK, but with Messers Blair and Bush being so close, you can't really rule anything out, can you?

You could always come visit here. I've always believed that with all the EU legislature on human rights, it would be sheer hell to get a draft pushed through, let alone ship someone back to face one.

But hey, it's a crazy world.

EDITO: Found what Miles was referring to, in that article:

"College and Canada will not be options. In December 2001, Canada and the U.S. signed a "smart border declaration," which could be used to keep would-be draft dodgers in. Signed by Canada's minister of foreign affairs, John Manley, and U.S. Homeland Security director, Tom Ridge, the declaration involves a 30-point plan which implements, among other things, a "pre-clearance agreement" of people entering and departing each country. Reforms aimed at making the draft more equitable along gender and class lines also eliminates higher education as a shelter. Underclassmen would only be able to postpone service until the end of their current semester. Seniors would have until the end of the academic year."

Damn, that sucks.
Ok, in June 2005, I'll have just graduated and I'll be 18, and not have started my freshman year yet, so I am prime meat for this draft, should it happen. I'm also one of two children, so I can't use that, either.

Oh yea, this is not good with me. Grrr...
