This isn't about lying, or pasts that people want to spin out of proportion. This is about finding a candidate fit for office, and trying to find a president that will best lead the country into accomplishing what needs to be done. So, the natural questions to be raised are, what is it that the US needs to do, what is it that the US wants to do, and who is best suited for filling those needs?

Since that last question cannot be properly answered without answering the first two, lets get them on the table. What does the US need?

Nah, that's what Bush needs!

*ducks projectiles*

Anyway. To bring in the view of a foreigner to this whole military service issue, it looks like this.

Bush - Weased out of frontline service.
Kerry - Didn't.

In all honesty, I don't think many care how many medals / awards Kerry got, although hero stories are fun for them. The simple fact he served in a well-known combat zone is enough.
Oh dear lord sig is fubar. o_o

Here are some of the things I felt had to be brought up in response to a couple things mentioned here already. You accuse Bush of being a draft dodger. Okay, maybe joining the Texas Air National Guard may seem that way, but so would attending college... There is always a chance you can be sent to war, and being on the national guard is better than doing nothing. You all are quite adept at poking insults at Bush, so I better try to balance things out.

How about taking a look at Kerry's exemplary record? In the forefront, fighting in Vietnam sounds very much like he really was working hard to defend peace. I mean, look at that, three Purple Hearts! Ooh.. shiny.

Purple Heart #1 Citation for injury sustained on 2 December 1968
Purple Heart #2 Citation for injury sustained on 20 February 1969
Purple Heart #2 Citation for injury sustained on 3 March 1969

Wow, and all within a period of four months, these wounds had officially ended Kerry's tour of duty in Vietnam. He may have been a serviceman for a long time, but the Vietnam war had to be longer than that. It all sounds too suspicious. Okay, here is a paper requesting John Kerry's Reassignment following the three injuries he sustained from Vietnam.

What were those injuries? I was looking for a primary source, but haven't yet found any. You are more than welcome to share them if you can. A poster on FreeRepublic states that they were from:

a wound on his arm

a minor shrapnel wound in his left thigh, and

a mine, which slightly wounded Kerry's right arm.

A lot of other places claim that some of these were self-inflicted, and other swift boat veterans claim the injuries to be based on outright lies. With all the swiftboat controversy and disputes by people who support or deny Kerry's claims that they were from enemy fire, there is just too much of a mess to show you a clear image. Of course, one thing was certain; the injuries couldn't have been severe enough to keep him from duty. The request to be transferred would have to be at least with Kerry's support, but anyone who really felt strongly about fulfilling his duty would not be so quick to turn tail over three noncrippling wounds. He transferred. He walked out on them. He broke his word.

Quote: (Septimius Severus @ Oct 3 2004, 04:54 PM)

He avoided front-line service by not avoiding it. How very zen of him.

How very zen indeed.

Even excusing that (since I have no frame of reference for how severe a shrapnel wound would feel), he alienated many vets, his own peers and fellow soldiers, by writing of many atrocities committed that others say did not happen in Vietnam. Who is lying? Hard to say for sure, but Kerry is not fully without suspicion.

Kerry has spoken up against Iraq's interim prime minister, Ayad Allawi, claiming that the PM has been trying to put a good face on the war in Iraq and is downplaying the terorist movements there, all but outright accusing him of lying. This is what you want in foreign relations? In order to support his accusations, Kerry would need to offer some proof that there is more than pockets of resistance in Iraq, but that is not going to happen. Lies? Maybe not, but his dispute has no merit.

As for the debates, I think anyone declaring either person a winner of the debate is trying to spin the results. I saw those debates, and all it made clear was their philosophical differences, and I have to say, they both have made valid as well as invalid arguments that I wish to bring up in the other topic as soon as I have reviewed the transcripts and made sure I covered everything discussed there.
