U.S. diplomats are being jerks

Postby Tom Flapwell » Fri Jun 27, 2008 3:01 pm

3.9: The amount, in millions of dollars, that U.S. diplomats owe in British traffic congestion charges, according to figures published Thursday by Britain's foreign ministry. The U.S. refused to pay a levy 23,188 times between February 2003 and May 2008.
That works out to an average of twelve refusals a day for more than five years.

Do they see this as a matter of "principle" or what?

Well, to be fair, it's a pretty crappy sort of a rule.

True, and they must work hard like this to keep it up.

I've got diplomatic immunity, so Hammer you can't sue
I can write graffiti, even jaywalk in the street
I can riot, loot, not give a hoot, and touch your sister's teat - can't touch me
Can't touch me

About the same, if not more. That's the biggest thing I hate about foreign diplomats. They can do almost anything they want, and get away with it, because they're immune to our laws.

Valid question since I'm pretty sure foreign diplomats still get diplomatic immunity here.

Yes, though if they commit a serious enough crime, they can be deported back to their country.
I recall there was one instance where a foreign diplomat was DUI and was involved in a fatal crash, and the US was successful in getting his immunity removed, and he was tried to manslaughter.

I think I recall the same thing. I knew the diplomatic immunity thing only applied to petty little crimes. I meant to mention that but my time ran short.

A better question would be "How much do British diplomats owe in traffic tickets in America?" I would imagine that it's far less.

And of course, American diplomats are immune to foreign law. No country is blameless (except perhaps Switzerland).
If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place. (Revelation 2:5, NIV)
