Oh, and happen to be red for some reason.

As in Babe Ruth?

Nope it is called the curse of the Bambino. you have to ask my brother-in-law or some other sports fanatic on why it is called that.
Babe Ruth used to be a member of the Boston Red Sox. His pitching (yes, pitching) was instrumental in helping the Sox win the 1916 and 1918 World Series. However, the owner of the Sox, tired of Ruth's insubordination, sold him to the New York Yankees for the then-record price of 125,000 dollars. Since then, the Yankees have been the most successful franchise in U.S. sports history, whereas the Red Sox didn't win a World Series until this year. 4 times the Sox made it to the Series, and each time lost in 7 games. All this is supposedly due to the Curse of the Bambino (Bambino was one of Ruth's nicknames).

The idea of a curse didn't really come into play until after the 1986 World Series, when the Sox lost to the Mets (yes, another New York team) in shocking fashion.
