teh stakes are high in the playground too! the loser is ostracized from just about everything, and unsympathetic teachers don't do anything, and it goes on like that for years!<br><br>Going through that is one of the prerequisites of being "Cynical".<br><br>I think... Actually, I'm pretty sure I'm wrong... but I don't know where. somebody correct me somewhere.

"Make the Electoral College come alive! Divide your entire school into 50 groups of varying sizes. Then assign a point value to each group rougly based on its size. Have each individual student then vote on an issue - say, 'chocolate or vanilla.' Tally the votes but tell them the side with the most votes isn't necessarily the winner. Instead, calculate the winner within each of the 50 groups, then give the previously assigned point value to the respective flavor. Add up the point values and see who has more. Isn't this a better way to figure out a winner?"<br>-<i>The Daily Show with Jon Stewart Presents America (The Book): A Citizen's Guide to Democracy in Action</i>

So what actually happens if the electoral college is hung, or if there are actually ties in states (theoretically possible) so that both candidates have less than 270 under the electoral college system?

<!--QuoteBegin--> <table border='0' align='center' width='95%' ><tr><td class='quotetop'><b>Quote:</b> </td></tr><tr><td class='quotebody'> Amendment XII<br><br>... if such number be a majority of the whole number of electors appointed; and if no person have such majority, then from the persons having the highest numbers not exceeding three on the list of those voted for as President, the House of Representatives shall choose immediately, by ballot, the President. But in choosing the President, the votes shall be taken by states, the representation from each state having one vote; a quorum for this purpose shall consist of a member or members from two-thirds of the states, and a majority of all the states shall be necessary to a choice. And if the House of Representatives shall not choose a President whenever the right of choice shall devolve upon them, before the fourth day of March next following, then the Vice-President shall act as President, as in the case of the death or other constitutional disability of the President. The person having the greatest number of votes as Vice-President, shall be the Vice-President, if such number be a majority of the whole number of electors appointed, and if no person have a majority, then from the two highest numbers on the list, the Senate shall choose the Vice-President; a quorum for the purpose shall consist of two-thirds of the whole number of Senators, and a majority of the whole number shall be necessary to a choice. But no person constitutionally ineligible to the office of President shall be eligible to that of Vice-President of the United States.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table> <!--QuoteEEnd--><br><br><br>Basically, if the electoral college is hung, the house of representatives votes, but by state. Therefore, if 20 Californian Congressmen want Bush, and 35 want Kerry, Kerry gets 55 votes. If the House has not chosen a president by 4 March 2005, Dick Cheney becomes president, and either John Edwards or Dennis Hastert would be vice president, unless there is a genuine tie, in which case the senate would appoint someone.

The stinky people don't count those who vote by not voting.
