I was thinking the same thing about that word Rocketgirl. Like, 20 minutes before I even read this post.

As much as I dislike English, I'm glad we don't have to worry about the subjunctive like in Spanish. Grargh I hate the subjunctive.

It is impossible that you avoid the subjunctive completely in English, though.

what exactly is the subjunctive? I checked wikipedia, and I understand what exactly it's about, but I can never understand linguistics unless it's explained in laymen's terms so I can figure out how to use it myself
(which saddens me, because being a quaker I'd really like to start using the informal 2nd person rather than the formal, but there's so many different tenses and stuff, I can never remember when to use some of them)

If I remember right, it has to do with uncertainty, and also with impersonal expressions and random other uses.

For instance, "she went to the store" would not use subjunctive while "it's good that she went to the store" would.

Yep. The subjunctive is a mood you use when something's uncertain, or unlikely, or seems like it shouldn't be true, or when it's tied to a verb which has a dummy subject (such as the "it" in "it is good"). In some languages it's also used to issue commands (as opposed to, or in addition to, the imperative mood).

I think it's fair to say that I'm much more concerned with who is NOT running it.
