I don't understand the aversion to just asking "What's your sexual orientation?" I mean, sure, it's a social faux-pas, but it doesn't hurt and would eliminate all that awkward guessing.

I wouldn't say musical taste or sweetness have anything to do with sexual orientation. I myself listen to mostly soft rock and pop, and I'm told I'm very sweet (off the internet that is), but I'm in no way gay. I know other people who fit this description as well and none of them are gay; one in fact has a wife and kid.
If that's all you're going by, then it's by no means an indicator of his sexuality. He may be gay, he may not be. However, I don't know him, and I don't know his mannerisms or anything, so I'm just judging as best I can from what you've said.
