Should atheists celebrate Christmas?

Postby Priest_Revan » Sun Dec 16, 2007 5:17 am

Or any other religious holiday for that matter.

I dont' get it... the atheist community wants to separate themselves from the religious community, but they just can't let go of a religious holiday... what the hell?

I mean, no offense to any atheist out there, but I just don't get it. If I was atheist, I wouldn't be celebrating Christmas...

That's like a Buddhist celebrating Ramadan.
If you put peanutbutter anywhere on your body, I'll lick it off...

Should atheists celebrate Christmas?
If they want too? Isn't that enough?

Or do you mean only Christians should be allowed to celebrate Christmas, and nobody else?

What about Halloween then? My dad says its a pagan holiday. Should Christians be prevented from celebrating Haloween too?

keep in mind that Christmas happens when it does in order to roughly coincide with the pagan solstice celebrations. the thinking was probably that they would be more willing to convert if they didnt lose there midwinter celebrations...

and, Christmas has become so commercialized that it barely counts as a religious holiday (for the non Christian) anyway.

Without religious holidays, they only come up once in a blue moon.

Actually, yes. I don't think it's right to be celebrating someone elses religious holiday. Don't ya think? I mean, yeah, many Christians celebrate it, but at the same time many don't because it's a pagan holiday (and because some believe that their celebrating in honour of the devil).

But think about it for a second. If you're going to break off a certain religious group, then why would you celebrate their holiday still?

That's (sadly) true. I think those who celebrate it for commercial reasons (including myself) need to go and celebrate a different holiday... like X-mas... and they (including myself) should celebrate it after or before Christmas.

When in Rome...

Yeah, it's something to celebrate. If there were enough atheists all grouped that were able to form a holiday, well great... but if not, why not do something. If I were in the Middle East, I'd probably participate in Ramadan too.

All the cool holidays are religious. I don't care what religion I belong to, I enjoy the presents and candy.

Just come up with an atheist version of giving gifts like all the other guys do for themselves. When it comes right down to it...its all about paid holiday vacation from where you work = 0 and working as much overtime as you can to buy stuff you don't need..but you don't want to look bad when your brother-in-law comes over with his kids and show up your kid's gifts.

I'm glad I don't have any in laws or kids and live miles and miles away from my family hurrr hurrr.

The Christmas holiday is rather practical with all the family and business and whatever. It's healthy to have some form of community event in the life.

I don't.

I don't do Christmas, that is.
I don't do Holidays at all.

By definition the word means "holy day"... and I don't believe in holiness, so there is no such thing as a holiday.
Besides... it modifies everyone's behaviour and makes them act in more-annoying-than-usual ways. Makes it difficult to lead a usual, normal, contentable life.

Christmas for me = family + food + presents
Christmas for Christians = family + food + presents + Jesus

Provided I can ignore Jesus I can celebrate Christmas. I can even just about stand Christmas prayers in school (bloody group worship in schools) and still generally enjoy myself, and that's really what it's all about.
