A sleeping dragon. I had fun doing this one. The spines on the tail aren't right so I'll update at some point. In the meantime: DO NOT DISTURB! :)

First thing that came to mind when I saw that was the red dragon from Bone.

Thanks everyone!

The improvement is mostly because, after the whole tracing thing from Fritz, I took a month off from drawing to re-think my approach. I decided to start from scratch, throwing out everything I thought I knew about drawing. I began with simple "copy this" books to get a basic idea of drawing. I kept at that untill I knew I was ready for something more complex.

The dragon book I'm working from now has actual text so it's not just "copy this". The drawings in the book just serve to illustrate the text, so you can see what you should be working toward. More like an art class in that respect.

Once I get the drift of the section of the drawing I'm working on, I close the book and work on my own. The end result is not a direct copy but a semi-original.

Thanks to this approach, I'm starting to learn how a drawing works and how to apply my own style to it. I hope that by this time next year, I'll be able to take the "training wheels" off and create stuff on my own.

But for now, there will be more dragons and other mythological creatures. :)

Fritz struck him down and he became more powerful than any of us could possibly imagine.

That's really good, you should keep at it.

I'm not very familiar with Bone. I've seen it and flipped through a few of the books and it looks like something I would enjoy. Maybe I'll spring for the giant complete volume sometime.

Somewhere in the back of my mind, I hear Han Solo saying, "Great kid, don't get cocky!" Good advice. :)

I'm almost finished with the next one, a closeup of a dragon head. It's not as good as the sleeping dragon but it would be stupid to expect all of my art to come out that well everytime. I also made my first attempt at scales and I think they are OK for a first attempt. I'll practice.

It should be up either late tomorrow or Monday. After that will be a sort of "graduate" drawing in which the author will take everything taught in the book and combine it into one drawing: a fire breathing dragon. I predict it will take awhile to complete as I hope to get it right.

And again, thanks everyone!

Here's a big ol dragon head for ya.

As I said, it's not as good as the sleeping dragon but it's not bad either. I think you can tell I really wasn't that interested in it. I found it kinda boring to tell the truth.

I started today on a fire breathing dragon which is much more interesting. That one should take a while so it'll probably be up sometime next month.

Bouncing back from my so-so dragon head, this is my last dragon for now. It was supposed to be a fire breather but I opted for lightning just to be different. That and I've seen too many Japanese monster movies. ;) Anyway, it came out pretty good and I'm happy with it.

Moving on to other mythical creatures, I quickly learned, like many before me, that horse anatomy is very difficult. This was my third attempt and the best. I left the eyes blank cause I just like the sinister vibe it gives off instead of the normal cuddly unicorns you usually see. Very happy with this!

Back from the dead! Here's some stuff I did or was doing when I lost my job last September and got too depressed to draw.

The good news is that the depression has lifted and putting these up is my first small step towards drawing again. Next step will be to update my DA page with these. After that, I'll see about putting pencil to paper again. :)

First, an unfinished phoenix. Needs his feet finished. Someday...
