Tracing will NOT teach me anything about drawing which is why I won't do it.

Seriously, I'm pretty good at copying. Always have been. It's trying to draw without anything to reference that I have a problem with.

Again, believe what you want. You clearly are being very narrow minded. Just because they look similar does not mean I traced it. Just can't open your mind to give me the benefit of the doubt can you?

But time will prove you wrong.

=| I'm not saying it isn't possible that you didn't trace it. Just saying it's very plausible. Don't worry about me, bro, I'm just a narrow minded dude messin up your thread.

OK. But just so you understand what I'm doing, I'm taking the cast pose, then making some changes. For each character, I'll do more and more changes untill I can draw them without using any reference.

The Ozy I'm working on, for example, has more changes then Millie. In fact, except for the top hat, and arm behind his back, it's pretty different.

Give me time. By the fall this should be a moot point.

Finished my Ozy pic! Pretty good. Not real thrilled with his left paw which is supposed to be making the peace sign. The only reference I could find for that was Millie on the cover of one of the books. I spent an hour on it and this is as close as I could get it.

One thing about the tracing comments is they really inspired me to prove those people wrong. This started out as an exact copy of the cast picture but evolved into something more original.

Overall, I'm happy with it.

Well, it's Ozy. He's pretty zen about everything.

peace signs are pretty hard to draw, don't worry cougar.

It looks sort of like he's broken his finger, and the colouring needs some serious improvement (the most important thing is to fill in the white bits). You're getting there, though.

Thanks. I did my best. I spent an hour drawing, erasing, and re-drawing it and this was the best I could come up with. Not bad really.

The "broken" finger is how DCS drew it on Millie which is what I was using for reference. I think the finger is supposed to be folded but even DCS couldn't make it look natural.

Agree on the coloring. I'm using Crayola Art Studio which isn't the best (though it IS a good program) but I can't afford anything more expensive. Maybe I'll invest in some colored pencils and try coloring the old fashioned way.

I do have Manga Studio but that's really for B&W art and besides, it's a bit too complex a program for me right now. For the time being, I want to keep things simple.

The white parts are supposed to be that way. I looked at several color pics of Ozy and don't think DCS colored those areas either.

What's really missing is shading but I'm not ready for that yet. Maybe in a drawing or two.

Thanks for the advice! I'll keep it in mind for the next drawing. Locke is next though I might add Ms. Mudd in with him. Which means I need to dig into the archives and print out the strips with Locke as an adult to use as reference. With each drawing I intend to keep challenging myself.

my advice would be simply remove the "broken finger" entirely, and draw it as though he only had three fingers. It would look perfect, you could claim that the other one or two fingers were just silhouetted.

Thanks! I just gave that a try and it looks great! I also moved the two fingers a little further apart so it looks more like the peace sign and not like he's just holding up two fingers.

I'll re-scan it and maybe later in the week re-ink and re-color. I might remove the name too as I'm not happy with how it turned out.

Much happier with it now! Not sure what I'm gonna draw this week. My attempt to draw Capt. Locke was just OK. Need to practice him a bit. Maybe I'll try Lewellyn or Isolde.
