HT, I call that sarcasm. Irony has a broader meaning. Not Morrisette broad, but it would be ironic if you said "Lightning never strikes twice" right before it did.

can't it be both?That's not irony. That's poetic justice.I should clarify, irony would be if said guy accidentaly hung himself while setting up a noose for which to lynch a black man.Those are both coincidence, not irony.

we're not necessarily talking about literary devices, either.It's irony. Poetic Justice is not a literary device, irony is.That's not irony.
