To be fair to the Chicago Tribune, they were in the midst of a writers strike and they had to rush out the issue while the vote counting was still going on.
To be even more fair, the Gallup poll blew it too. They picked Dewey to win.

To be yet even more fair, the paper that printed that headline was pro-republican and almost every major paper was sure Dewey would win too. Even Truman's own team saw little point in spending too much through the campaign and that this was their end.
