There is no need to find meaning in The artist's excuse, although it may be amusing to try.

Single panel strips can be a difficult but gratifying medium for humor; any that have read the works of Gary Larson know that all too well. I would like to point out the choice of images Millie's muse (or is it David Simpson's muse?) manage for the most part to be in character for Millie: "goo goo ga joob", the self-portrait, "BOOGER", a peace sign, the smiley with its tongue sticking out, "Millie was here and she still probably is"... I'm not sure how well the sun and planets fit in, but you have to admire the works of a kid that small that can draw that high up on a wall.

The Arist's Excuse

This is one of those strips that you just have to laugh at. It seems as if this was set up to please a syndicate, just a joke that can stand on its own, be cut out, and put on a fridge as simpson put if for another strip where millie wants coffee in the morning.
I find the artwork in this to be actually quite interesting. Notice the tails, for instance, with the squigle at the bottum to indicate depth. Also, notice that the tips of there tails are white, instead of the black we get in the newer art style. I know that the tails are the same for anything around that given time period, however it seems much more noticable in this one panel deal.

As for the actions that took place, you can obviousley see millie has been there a while, with the amount of art on the walls. Take notice, thought, that the art goes even above the head of Ms. Mudd. kinda have to wonder how millie was able to reach up there... maybe she really DOES have a muse!

For anyone just tuning in, FoxChild's muse and mine just made a head-on collision while shouting "I got it! I got it!"

Edit: Ooh.. 256th post.

I think I figured out how Millie drew so high up on the wall. See that table over there?
By the power of greyskull, I'm not sure I believe that.

DC Simpson IS Millie's Muse. And fHe is also their chief deity, if he wishes to be...
that is the law with all mediums with an author. i think a prequisite is that the fourth wall has to be broken and then stomped on several times. I dont really think that "playing god in a comic strip" as was done in "bob and george", is really Mr. Simpson's style... i'm just saying it's an option; although there are some instances where it's obvious he has, although right now, i;m too lazy to find out where it isor once i'm not the only one who's wondering how Millie could draw so high... i'm with a smart crowd, yay!

Edit: what the?! I thought I deleted that part between "And f" and"isor once"... ah well
Ahh.. the artist being deified by the art. That's one of those notions I didn't expect to see in here. I've seen stuff like that before, but I feel it doesn't work right. To include yourself as a deity of your own comic strip, for example, you would have to become a part of your own comic. For obvious technical reasons, we can't do it. Not completely anyway. The best one could hope to accomplish is an avatar or construct that would represent the author but would not necessarily faithfully match the author's true form. I strongly feel that trying hard not to disturb the natural progression of a story works better than forcing everything.

Hm... someone could make similar comments about the nature of God, or whatever deity is credited with the creation of this reality, describing reality as an artwork, and its deity as the author.

It's the 24th for me too, but if you look at the date on my post...

I'm central time, so this calender is about sixteen hours off. But hey, when you've got an Australian at the helm of the board...

What is "goo goo ga joob" from? I know it's in reference to something, but I can't put my finger on what.
