Getting permission

Postby Joe3210 » Sat Apr 21, 2007 9:10 pm

How would I go about getting permission to print a comic and posting it on my dorm room door?

Can I just ask Simpson on this forum?
I wonder if it'll finally get it's own forum too. I've always wanted a place online where I can talk about O&M.

I don't think he'll have a problem with you just printing it up for display purposes. As long as you don't make money off of it somehow.

DCS should've ended the comic a year or two ago.

Yeah, I'd say you can just do it without asking permission.

I asked him for permission a couple years back to print a strip and post it around my college campus, he said he was fine with it, so yeah. I wouldn't worry. lol

Just don't claim it's your own and/or profit from it and you should be ok.

Not claiming it as your own basically just means leaving the text at the bottom and DCS' signature intact.

If you really want to contact him, e-mail him. His address is on the O&M homepage.

What you want to do is personal use, so you could probably even crop the bottom copyright, comic name, and website url off if you wanted to. But of course, I myself wouldn't, out of respect and so people could easily find more if they liked the strip.

Now if you wanted to do something more along the lines of put a strip or a piece of one in a poster to promote an event, you'd have to get permission (I'd probably send a PDF of the poster and ask if he approved :)). If you go farther and make money off of it.... well that's a bit of a no-no, unless it's clear the majority of the effort was yours and the O&M character or strip just fits in perfectly, as a little afterthought. Even then DCS should probably be compensated with a little something.

That's the sort of thing you never have to ask permission for. Artists like when you do that, in fact. :)

That's good to hear.

Thanks.

Now, do these same courtesy rules apply for posting O&M strips on other people’s doors?
In Egypt's sandy silence, all alone,
Stands a gigantic Leg, which far off throws
The only shadow that the Desert knows: –
"I am great OZYMANDIAS," saith the stone,
"The King of Kings; this mighty City shows
"The wonders of my hand." – The City's gone, –
Nought but the Leg remaining to disclose
The site of this forgotten Babylon.

We wonder, – and some Hunter may express
Wonder like ours, when thro' the wilderness
Where London stood, holding the Wolf in chace,
He meets some fragments huge, and stops to guess
What powerful but unrecorded race
Once dwelt in that annihilated place.
--Horace Smith.
