I blame the proliferation of CGI.
That wouldn't account for Lon Chaney, Jr. According to Dave Barry, he turns from "an ordinary person into... a person with obviously fake hair pasted all over him! Ooh, scary!"

CGI can create time machine effects thus explaining Lon Chaney, Jr. and preventing me from being wrong. :-P
