I'd say wanting no desires is kind of selfish.

Weeell... the reason why you are getting nowhere is because you try to reason zen. With a mindful approach zen seems more n more bizzare the closer you inspect it.
The answer to zen lies within the heart.
All ways of Buddhism as well as Daoism have the heart at the center. Like it is said "The brain can not comprehend the brain" it's said "to understand the heart with the heart is impossible". This is why meditation is at the core practice in all of them.
By the simple practice concentrating on the breath one becomes aware of the heart. A rather crude example is that you will find pondering yourself something some time into meditation a suddenly you realise in a flash "man, where have I wandered off to?? I am concentraing on my breath O.o"

When the mind starts to calm down things will reveal themself in a very personal manner to one. Current mental pain becomes bodily pain, the resuming pain becomes old problems lying dormant... the process of self-enlightenment and purification ^^

To get back at the rain example: Accepting that it's raining is outward practice of the right attitude. Being zen means you don't mind that it rains at all... it's simply natures way. To distinguish reciting that and having it bloomed in your heart is a lifetime journey of experiences =^.^=

I hope noone is TOO confused now

does that mean we should understand the heart with the brain and vice versa...

or should i have listened better?

Edit: i reread it and it makes more sense now... i think...
I agree with that, it's very hard to "know thyself" while being "thyself" and as I have learned through my research, it's very easy to have an external view of yourself and everything about you.
So if you can do that, then you can do it with other things too!

While at the bookstore today i saw a book called Zen Computer by someone (i've forgotten but he was obviously eastern) where it explains computer learning, skills and functions through zen. Of the little i read it was quite good and the blend was clever without making it wierd. Of course the book maybe all a big joke but i only read one or two pages.

Anyway the introduction had several questions in it, one of which was "What is Zen?" As close as i can remember it said:
"No one can explain it. Anyone who can claim to is not to be taken seriously. The best answer to give is with a clap of the hands."
I can't remember anymore unfortunately. Apparently this person also has a book called Zen Guitar.
