This strip and the one before it kind of represent a duel between Millie and her mother. Millie, as children do in these situations, invariably loses, but I think they both enjoy the game.

The last panel is worded kind of awkwardly but I like this comic.

Oh god, now I can't unsee it...
Two consecutive strips with references to cassettes. At the time I think I still listened to them, in the car; as I write this I can't even remember the last time I listened to a cassette. So, let's observe a moment of silence for technologies past.

Obviously, I drew this in the era before CD burners became universal.

I have witnessed this in real life: people draped in the most absurd excesses of modern fashion, making fun of photos of people draped in the worst excesses of yesterday's fashion. People never learn.

One of many indications, I think, that Llewellyn's apparent randomness, his seeming disconnection from actual events, is very deliberate.

And that's terrible.
The members of the Ozy and Millie internet mailing list wondered if this strip was a slam at their failure to stay on topic. For the record, it wasn't.

I think if Millie had been assigned to play the conga drums and shout nonsense, she would have made a duck out of construction paper.

Re: Friday, January 7, 2000: Shock value
Maybe, as someone who works in what's generally regarded as a pretty lowbrow art form, I have no right to mock the pretentiousness of "real" artists. Then again, maybe there's a reason I didn't decide to become one.

Yes. Kind of like how we were supposed to feel sympathy for Ms. Wormwood who despite being an antagonist to Calvin was just someone trying to do her job but was growing more and more stressed with that job leading to drug abuse.

On the other hand, selling out is way harder than it seems. It's a skill in and of itself.

Mr. Larnblatt strikes me as someone who got into teaching music because of genuine passion, and has had that more or less driven out of him by kids like Millie.

That was so relevant to the comic and such an inciteful piece of commentary that I'm giving you a special gold star. Just for you. Exchange five for me giving a crap.

Re: Wednesday, January 5, 2000: Return to individuality
I think a lot of kids naturally seek conformity as a form of validation. But they don't like to have it imposed by people they perceive as authority figures. Thus, advertising has to convince you that the decision you're being manipulated into making is actually your own.
